WATER COURSES

Water Courses are not just about swimming; they are about surviving, thinking clearly and acting safely in water. The program is structured to guide participants from basic comfort in water to controlled movement, efficient self-rescue and simple assistance to others, always within civilian safety limits.

 

Course Objectives

 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Stay afloat and control their breathing in various water conditions.

  • Apply water survival strategies to conserve energy and avoid panic.

  • Use basic scuba equipment safely in a controlled environment.

  • Perform special swimming techniques that support self-rescue and reaching safety.

  • Apply basic life-saving techniques in water to assist a person in difficulty, without becoming a second victim.

 

Course Content

 

1. Water Survival Fundamentals

  • Understanding water risks: panic, fatigue, cold, currents and visibility

  • Calmness under stress: breathing, body position and mindset

  • Safe entry and exit methods from pool and open water

  • How to prioritize safety: self-rescue first, then helping others

2. Basic Scuba Training (Introductory Level)

  • Overview of scuba equipment: mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, BCD, tank

  • Breathing underwater: controlled, relaxed breathing patterns

  • Basic underwater movement and body positioning

  • Simple hand signals and buddy awareness in shallow, controlled conditions

 

3. Floating & Energy Conservation

  • Back float and survival float techniques

  • Using minimal movement to stay on the surface

  • How to manage clothing and equipment while floating

  • Techniques for staying afloat when tired or stressed

 

4. Special Swimming Techniques for Self-Rescue

  • Simple, efficient strokes for distance and control (e.g., side stroke, breaststroke variations)

  • Swimming with minimal splash and energy use

  • Changing direction and pace safely in crowded or challenging water

  • Moving toward safety points: shore, pool edge, boat or flotation devices

 

5. Basic Life-Saving Techniques in Water

  • How to recognize a person in real distress vs. playful behavior

  • Safe approach techniques to avoid being grabbed or pulled under

  • Supporting and towing a tired or panicked swimmer (within training limits)

  • Basic use of flotation aids (rescue tube, life ring, improvised flotation)

  • Post-rescue priorities: getting out of the water and activating emergency services

 

Course Format

  • Method: Theory, dry-practice on land, shallow-water drills and controlled deep-water sessions.

  • Approach: Small groups, step-by-step progression, constant safety supervision.

  • Focus: Practical, real-world skills that match the Defence 7.24 philosophy of discipline, safety and readiness.

 

This course is ideal for anyone who wants to go beyond “just swimming” and develop true water confidence and survival capability, aligned with the overall defensive and healthy living mindset of Defence 7.24.
